Android Nougat adoption hits 13 5 percent

Google has released the Android distribution data for the month of August, and as per the latest numbers Nougat is picking up pace in terms of adoption, ahead of Android O release.

Android Nougat now runs on 13.5 percent, up two percent compared to last month 11.5 percent share. This can be further broken down as 12.3 percent for Nougat v.7.0, and 1.2 percent for Nougat v7.1.

Marshmallow (v6.0) is now present on most of devices, grabbing 32.3 percent share of the pie, a rise of 0.5 percent compared to last months 31.8 percent. However, all other Android versions saw a decline.

Lollipop which was running on 30.1 percent of active Android devices, lost 0.9 percent share of the pie, and is now present on 29.2 percent devices. Android 4.4 KitKat also declined from last months 17.1 percent to 16 percent, a drop of 1.1 percent share.

The outdated versions, Android Jelly Bean (4.1, 4.2, 4.3) had a combined share of 7.6 percent, down 0.5 percent, than last months 8.1 percent share. Lastly Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread distribution numbers remained unchanged at stayed at 0.7 percent.

The Android Distribution numbers are gathered from devices running Android 2.2 accessed the Play Store in a seven-day period ending on August 8, 2017. Its worth mentioning that devices running older Android version like Honeycomb and Froyo are not included. Also devices that dont have Google Play installed like Android phone and tablets in China, are not taken into account as well.

Focusing our Google Play games services efforts

In order to help developers make great games and build their businesses, we
offer Google Play Games Services (GPGS). GPGS provides powerful tools to build, analyze and retain your audience and optimize your
game. After listening to developer feedback and examining usage, we have decided
to remove some of the features so we can focus on making our offering more
useful.

In December, we
announced the end of support for the creation of new iOS accounts given the
low usage of GPGS on iOS. Additionally, our latest Native SDK release (2.3) will
no longer support integration with iOS and going forward we will not be
supporting or updating the iOS SDK.

Weve also examined the features that GPGS offers. While developers use
engagement and reporting tools extensively, there is lower usage for Gifts,
Requests, and Quests. We therefore plan to stop supporting Gifts, Requests, and Quests. In
order to help developers that do use these features plan for their removal, we will leave them open for 12 months, deactivating them by 31st March 2018. Well
be continuing support for other features such as Sign-in, Achievements,
Leaderboards and Multiplayer.

Play games services remains an important part of the tools we provide
developers, and were working hard on future GPGS updates. We continue to be
strongly committed to providing high quality services for Games, including new
tools such as official
Firebase support for Unity and C++ developers, and integration
with Firebase Analytics. These changes allow us to focus our efforts on the
services developers value most to build high quality, engaging games.
