Privacy Feature Removed with Android 4 4 2 Update

App Ops is the privacy feature on Android, which allowed users to block apps from collecting personal data such as location and address book information. It was first found on the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update and now, Google has removed the experimental feature with the 4.4.2 update. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) reported the silent removal of the App Ops privacy feature by Google with the current android update rolling out for the Nexus devices.

Google commented that it was an experimental feature and its release was merely an accident. The feature was termed as a popular and useful tool to install apps. The EFF wrote that Google could have improved the feature instead of removing it altogether and it is an alarming news for Android users. Peter Eckersley of the EFF wrote: The fact that they cannot turn off app permissions is a Stygian hole in the Android security model, and a billion peoples data is being sucked through. Embarrassingly, it is also one that Apple managed to fix in iOS years ago.

Motorola Moto G tips and tricks

The Motorola Moto G is a game-changing phone -- its quad-core chip, pure Android 4.3 and pin-sharp HD screen are fantastic value at the bargain-basement price of £135. Its likely to find its way into many a stocking this Christmas, so familiarise yourself with this super-cheap Android phone with our handy hints and tantalising tips.

1. Secure your phone

The Moto G might be cheap, but you still want to make sure you dont lose it. The phone comes with Motorolas own Device ID system, where you can register the handset and locate it later on if you misplace it. When you switch on the Moto G for the first time youll be prompted to enter your Google account to activate this service, but if you skip this step for whatever reason, you can begin the process anew by going to Settings > Motorola device ID. Its also possible to unlock the phone from this menu as well.

2. Take a screenshot

You can take a screenshot of your display by holding the power button and volume button down together. The resultant shot will be deposited in your phones gallery, in a folder called -- you guessed it -- Screenshots.

3. Add widgets to your lock screen

Widgets are still one of Androids most unique features, and in Android 4.3, theyre not limited to your homescreen any more -- you can view them even when you phone is locked. On the lock screen, simply slide from left to right and then tap the plus icon to add a widget. These include your calendar, messaging inbox and Gmail.

4. Automatically upload photos to the cloud

Its possible to preserve your photos and videos by using a cloud-based upload service on your Moto G. Googles Facebook rival Google+ comes with such a feature, as does cloud file service Dropbox -- both of which will prompt you to enable the functionality when you sign into them for the first time.

5. Transfer content from your old Android phone

Googles Android service takes the pain out of upgrading by allowing you to store all your data in the cloud, including emails, contacts and application information. There are still elements which dont get transferred properly though, but fear not -- the Moto G comes with a handy Migrate tool, which sorts all of this out for you. Youll need to ensure you install the app on your existing phone (which needs to be Android-based, naturally) but the whole process is about as painless as it gets.

6. Customise your app tray

See that row of icons at the bottom of your homescreen? These are quick-launch shortcuts to key applications, and by default are set to Phone, Chrome, Messaging and Camera. Youre not stuck with this selection though -- by holding your finger down on the app icon, you can remove it from the tray and replace it with one of your own choice. The only shortcut you cant remove is the one in the middle, which opens the Moto Gs app drawer.

7. Take multiple photos

Multi-shot burst modes arent anything new, but the way theyre accessed on the Moto G is especially intuitive. Instead of having to enter a different shooting mode or tinker with options, all you have to do is hold your finger down on the screen, and the camera will keep snapping as long as your finger remains in contact with the display.

8. Turn your phone into a pocket-sized interpreter

Travelling to a new country is often a fraught and tense experience -- new food, different weather, staring locals -- and then theres the language barrier to contend with. Your shiny new Moto G can help with that. It comes with the latest version of Google Translate installed, which means you can instantly translate speech, text and even handwriting. There are loads of different languages to pick from -- yes, even Yiddish -- and the app will even attempt to detect the language if youre unsure.

9. Open your camera from the phones lock screen

If you have a screen lock pattern or pin code on your phone then youll no doubt be annoyed by the fact that you have to unlock the device to access the camera -- and that means you could potentially miss vital family shots. Thankfully, Android 4.3 allows you to swiftly fire up the snapper from the lock screen -- all you need do is swipe from right to left. Any photos you take can be reviewed, but be aware that you wont be able to access the rest of the phones gallery until you unlock the device properly.

10. Effortlessly control your phones ringer

Using the Moto Gs preinstalled Assist application, you can tell your phone when youd like it to disable your ringer. Assist can view any upcoming meetings you have stored in your calendar and silence the phone during these periods. You can also set a time at night when youd like the phone to remain silent, so incoming alerts dont disturb your shuteye.

11. How to get the Nexus 5 interface

When we upgraded to Android 4.4 on our Moto G, we half-hoped we’d get the Nexus 5’s interface. The current Nexus was the first phone to show off Android 4.4, and it has a different look to almost every other Android phone.

It’s because the Nexus 5 uses the Google Experience interface rather than the usual Android one. However, if you like the friendly, clean look of this interface you can get it on the Moto G, with a bit of fiddling.

First, you need to download a specific apk Android app file, which enables Google Experience. You’ll find it hosted by Android Police.

Either download it using your computer or do so directly on your phone. Then find it using a file browser app such as ES File Explorer, and install it. Youll need to enable installs from unknown sources in Settings > Security first.

Once installed, you’ll be given the option to either use the normal UI or the Google Experience one when you press the Home button. Select the ‘use as default’ option to continue using the new interface a bit more permanently on your Moto G.

There are also ‘home switcher’ apps available from Google Play that that let you switch between default interfaces without having to fiddle about in the Settings menu. One of them we’ve tried is – helpfully – called simply Home Switcher.

12. A bumper case is best for long-term protection

The Motorola Moto G is a well-made phone. However, some aspects of its build have been sacrificed in order to keep the Gorilla Glass front panel safe.

The plastic shell of the phone sticks out from the screen by a fraction of a millimetre, meaning the plastic (rather than the glass) takes the brunt of any impacts. It means the plastic screen surround is susceptible to damage – without any particular bad treatment.

To avoid this sort of damage, consider investing in a bumper-style rubber case, or Motorola’s own flip cover. This uses a front flap that should soak up some of the pressure of bumps and scrapes.

13. Use an app zapper for performance maintenance

One of the few weak bits of the Motorola Moto G is that it doesn’t have all that much RAM – just 1GB. Once you have a load of apps installed, many of which may be sucking up system resources in the background, the phone can start to chug a little.

In order to keep performance solid, install a task killer app that can force an app to stop running. An issue with Android is that apps can end up performing activities when they shouldn’t, causing battery life and performance issues. Advanced Task Killer is an app manager we frequently return to.

App killers arent a cure all solution, but we found theyre useful every now and again as a last resort.

14. Install Google Keyboard for gesture typing

The Motorola Moto G is one of the more up-to-date Android phones around. However, it can do with a software tweak or two fresh out of the box.

One key thing to change is the keyboard. The phone has the generic Android keyboard, which is actually a little different from the ‘Google’ keyboard available from Google Play. It doesn’t have gesture typing for one, and as such we strongly recommend switching to the Google keyboard.

To do so, head over to Google Play and get the app downloaded, go to Settings > Language & Input, make sure the check box for the Google keyboard is ticked. Then tap on Default and select the Google keyboard option to make it your go-to keyboard. Other keyboards worth checking out include Swiftkey and Touchpal.

15. How to fix app install parsing errors

One of the most annoying issues of the Motorola G is that some handsets suffer from a parse error that stops you from installing apps that come from anywhere but the Google Play app store. Trying to do so will result in an error message you can’t easily get around.

Some people have found that performing a factory reset on the phone solves the issue – to try this go to Settings > Backup & Reset and select Factory Data Reset.

However, we didn’t find this to be a problem-buster. A fix will come in time with a software update, but there is also a way to work around the parsing error for the time being. You can upload your .apk files to Google Drive, Google’s cloud storage service, and install them from there. There’s an app for Drive pre-installed on the Moto G.

To upload a file to Google Drive, install a file manager such as ES File Explorer, use it to locate the .apk file you downloaded. Tap the file’s entry, press the ‘More’ menu item at the bottom and then tap the Share option in the pop-up submenu. One of the options here will be Google Drive.

You don’t actually have to wait for the full file to upload. Once the upload has started, you’ll be able to install the app/game by simply tapping its entry in the Google Drive app (which you’ll be sent to upon sharing the file). You can then cancel the upload to save data.

16. Use HDR mode if you want half-decent photos

The Motorola Moto G’s camera is not very good. However, you can get reasonable results if you use the HDR mode. HDR stands for high dynamic range, and it uses multiple exposures merged together to produce higher-quality, more vivid shots.

To turn HDR mode on, swipe left to right on the edge of the screen when in the camera app to bring up the camera menu. There will be an HDR option within it. The downside of using HDR mode is that it’s pretty slow, requiring a couple of seconds for each shot. However, it’s pretty much the only way to produce satisfying photos with the phone.

17. How to transfer your old data with Motorola Migrate

Motorola Migrate is an app that lets you take content from your old phone and bung it into your new Moto G. It’s pretty clever, and very simple.

All you do is install Motorola Migrate on both phones (it comes preinstalled on the Moto G), and scan a QR code on your old phone with the new ones camera. You’ll need an internet connection, but Migrate will do the rest. It’ll give you old text messages, your contacts and even your media.

18. How to update to Android 4.4

Android 4.4 KitKat is already out for some versions of the Moto G, but by no means all of them. We strongly recommend waiting until the official release is available for your phone, rather than crowbarring in the update by rooting your phone.

To check if the update has been released for your particular Moto G variant, go to Settings > About Phone and tap the system updates option. This will manually search for software updates. If one is available, on-screen prompts will help you install it. Otherwise, just hang on.

Smartphone Champions League completes – meet the champion

Time to break out the champagne and celebrate the first winner of the Smartphone Champions League, the Nokia Lumia 1520. The first Lumia phablet had a lot to overcome some high-profile challengers, including its Lumia 1020 sibling at the end.

We’d like to thank the dedicated fans that swayed the results and several times gave us some surprising turnarounds.
We had no influence over the results, other than selecting the top 32 devices in our database, the winners in each round were determined by your votes. It was exciting to see fans band together to support their device of choice. Keep in mind this was all for fun, so please don’t take it personally if yours didn’t win.
There will be a second tournament at some point in the future with new devices and probably some of the old ones, so you might get a second chance.
Let’s recap how the Nokia Lumia 1520 got to the final. It started off with relatively easy marks like the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini and the Lumia 720. The first real challenger came in the face of the Sony Xperia Z1. Then at the semi-finals the Lumia 1520 was back to sibling rivalry, facing off against the Lumia 520 (this device alone is a third of the Windows Phone market).
Our other semifinalist, the Lumia 1020 had a much tougher path – the very first match was against the highly popular samsnug Galaxy Note 3, then came the Moto G, the Galaxy S III (a favorite from last year) and finally the Nexus 5. There was a rally behind the Nexus, but the Lumia eventually prevailed, only to lose in the final round to its newer sibling.

We’d like to thank again everyone who voted for making our first Smartphone Champions League so fun and exciting!

Selfie obsessed Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime leaks

The selfie is easily the most popular genre of photo these days and Samsung may try to capitalize on that market with the Galaxy Grand Prime. Photos of the handset reveal its front-facing camera boasts 5MP resolution, a sizeable improvement over the 2MP shooters of previous Grands.
The unofficial info about the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime also reveals an 8MP main camera with 1080p video capture. The phone will be powered by a Snapdragon 400 chipset with 1GB RAM, running Android 4.4 KitKat. So far, so Galaxy Grand 2.

Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime in the wild

The new model will have a different screen though – 5" big but with qHD resolution. Thats a bit of downgrade compared to the 5.25" 720p screen of the Galaxy Grand 2 but a slight improvement over the 5" WVGA of the first-gen Grand.
Like other Grands, the Galaxy Grand Prime will be a dual-SIM device with 3G connectivity (HSPA going up to 42Mbps down, 5.76Mbps up). Other connectivity includes dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0. Theres also 8GB of built-in storage expandable via microSD card slots.
This info comes from Vietnam where the Galaxy Grand Prime is expected to arrive in October. This is Samsungs first phone with a high-res front-facing camera but the competition will be waiting for it – the bigger Sony Xperia C3 Dual is already available and the Nokia Lumia 730 Dual SIM should arrive by then too.

Sony Tablet S

SONY TABLET S REVIEW

We first saw it at the IFA trade show back in September and you can read our immediate impressions in this Hands on: Sony Tablet S. It impressed us then. The unusual wedge-like shape is reminiscent of a magazine that has had the front cover folded back on itself. Holding it upright, the thicker edge sits in the palm of your hand far more comfortably than the razor-like edges of most modern tablets. It also has a textured back to give your fingertips extra grip. Turn it horizontally and the rear is tapered inwards slightly, with recesses down either edge for the buttons and ports. Place it on a desktop and the screen sits up at a slight angle, making it easier to type on. The screen itself measures 9.4in across, slightly smaller than most Android tablets, but has the same 1,280x800 resolution. Despite a slightly higher pixel count per inch, we couldnt say it looks any more detailed than the iPad 2s 1,024x768 screen; and Apples tablet is certainly a little brighter, with more vibrant colours. Its unique shape makes it a little chunkier than its competitors, ranging from 10mm to 20mm in depth. We cant say that we found it any harder to carry around day-to-day than the Apple iPad 2, though it may upset the aesthetic sensibilities of some. It weighs 598g, around the same as the iPad 2, which is a little disappointing given it has a smaller battery. Battery life is respectable with just under 10 hours of continuous H264 video playback from its 4,400mAh battery. The iPad 2 managed a stunning 17 hours, though, thanks both to better power efficiency and a larger 6,930mAh battery. For use around the home, the shorter battery life isnt a huge deal, though less charging is always good. If your hearts set on an Android device, the Tablet S compares well to our current favourite the Asus Transformer, which lasted for 8h 37min in the same test. There are two cameras, and while the front-mounted VGA camera was up to the job of video chat, the main 5-megapixel camera was a little disappointing. Images indoors exhibited all the usual noise and colour cast problems were used to seeing from tablet and phone cameras. The key exception being Sonys own back-lit EXMOR R sensors, so its a shame that one isnt used here. Things were better outdoors, but shots still werent crisp enough to live up to the 5-megapixel rating. Inside is the same Nvidia Tegra 2 chipset used in the majority of premium Android tablets. Running at 1GHz it completed the SunSpider JavaScript benchmark in 2,160ms - a typical score given the specification. Theres a lot to like about the Tablet S. The shape is great, making the tablet more comfortable to hold and use than the usual super-slim examples. If you are buying it for living room use, then the built-in IR control is a truly useful addition, and the main reason to buy a Tablet S over its competitors. Battery life, the display and the camera are all fairly typical for an Android tablet, though, which is disappointing given the expectation that comes with a Sony logo.

Amazon Echo Review 2015

Amazon Echo Review:Amazon Echo talks the talk, but still needs a little work on walking the stroll

Amazon Echo Review 2015-The favorable The Amazon Echo is usually an attractively designed speaker and its particular voice-control system, anchored by soothing as well as smooth-sounding "Alexa, " works well within its latest limited scope. The speakers Wi-Fi create is relatively straightforward and also directly connect with the speaker by using Bluetooth. The presenter plays loud as well as Alexas voice looks clear. The Bad At the moment, it cant be setup with an iOS device -- only Android and Fire goods need apply.

Amazon Echo Release

Amazon Echo Release Date

The presenter doesnt sound excellent with music (it distorts from higher volumes), nor does it doesnt have any battery option, so it has to be plugged in always. And -- thus far, anyway -- Alexa is actually more a novelty over a useful productivity tool. The end Line The Amazon Echo shows promise and is a bargain from its introductory price of $99 with regard to select Prime associates -- but its too much of a work beginning to enthusiastically advise at its total list price. Sad to say, Alexa couldnt -- or maybe rather she would not answer my question -- nonetheless it didnt hurt in order to ask, because I know that one day Alexa should be able to create her personal review by swiftly combing by way of a dozen human-made critiques, and condensing them around the fly into 1 paragraph, rating as well as all.

Alexa is the voice behind Replicate, Amazons new voice-activated, cloud-connected cellular speaker, who talks back and acts as sort of a personal assistant. But for at this point shes somewhat constrained in her functions, though not devoid of some nifty steps up her sleeve. But before we enter those tricks, a little bit of bookkeeping: Echo posesses list price involving $199 (theres no word as to when or if it can be available internationally, but that cost converts roughly to £125 in england, or a very little over AU$230 with Australia). But if youre an Amazon Prime member, youll have the capacity to buy the presenter for $99 with its launch stage, which may go on for a few months. Anybody who would like to buy one, however -- Prime or else - needs in order to request an invite from Amazon undertake a chance to personal one. Or you could just spend a lot of money and buy one on eBay, like we did (which I might advise against).

The lady understands me

The way well does Replicate work? While its got a few problems, its one of several better voice-controlled equipment Ive used and it also overall seems to do a more satisfactory job understanding what youre saying versus improving voice-control systems built into todays iOS (Siri), Android (Google Now) as well as Windows (Cortana) cellular phones. Notably, Amazons voice controls to its Fire TV also are very effective, so it definitely has some talented engineers implementing its voice recognition projects.

There are 7 microphones embedded in the top of this fairly sleek 9. 25-inch (23. 5 cm) high canister-style speaker, which is available in only black for the moment (I wouldve liked to possess seen a light model). The volume ring with top of the presenter lights up after you say "Alexa, " letting you know she is willing to accept your control. Alexa understood the vast majority of mine -- or at least the ones she was purported to understand.

Also, her voice was fairly natural answering and adjusting me. I think Im keen on her better when compared with Siri, though I may be slightly biased since my middle label is Alexis. In addition to yes, the voice is actually personable and "real" enough whos very much seems more natural to reference Alexa as "she" as opposed to "it. " You can even call her "Amazon, inches but that only didnt feel appropriate. (So far as we can tell, its not possible to change the get up word "name" to whatever else, nor can people change the "gender" with the voice. )

To begin with, you have to plug the speaker to your residence Wi-Fi network through an app on a good Android or Amazon online marketplace Fire tablet or maybe phone and desktop browsers. An iOS application isnt available nevertheless, and at launch there is not much you can do with an iphone beyond connecting it on the speaker via Wireless and streaming audio going without running shoes. Strangely, although the actual Echo has 7 microphones, I couldnt have it to work as being a Bluetooth speaker phone, but that operation may arrive in the foreseeable future.

In Amazons ads to the device, it shows various members of your family asking the idea questions. It works particularly well getting a weather estimate, both the daily and weekly kinds. You can furthermore ask Alexa some time, to set a good alarm or timer available for you, add items for a to-do or shopping lists on your own tablet or smart phone, and learn exciting from facts via her, including explanations of words. And she may also tell a ruse.

I was also impressed from the music playback characteristics. If youre any Prime member, you can quickly have Alexa crank out a playlist available for you or play a particular station based while on an artist or an authentic station. And she ceases the music as well as raises and lowers the amount on command. With launch, Echo is compatible with Amazon Audio, iHeartRadio and TuneIn, and not surprisingly, Alexa also allows you for you to buy songs from Amazon online marketplace.

If you connect with the speaker with Bluetooth mode, you should utilize Spotify and various other music services, yet you cant only tell Alexa to start playing a Spotify playlist at this point. It has to be done the old-fashioned means -- manually over the Spotify app on your own phone or tablet. In other phrases, when connecting by using Bluetooth, Echo is just another "dumb" cellular speaker.

No battery option but transportable nevertheless

After the 1st setup, you arent required to use the Echo app to use Echo, but you can "voicecast" Alexas answers for a tablet or smart phone (it happened automatically for me). Its also worth noting that this speaker should be plugged in and has no a battery solution. You can move it from room to room quickly enough, so long since you remain within variety of your Wi-Fi network. If you acquire the speaker completely to another location outside your network, youll have to get another working wireless point out tap into and have the setup routine all over again. To shoot the video with the product, I had to move the Echo collected from one of Wi-Fi network in this office to another, and was able to push the button on the new network in about 5 minutes. It turned out rather painless, so that was good.

As the main Echo bundle, you get a remote with a built-in microphone to help you talk to Alexa if youre too far away from the Echos built-in microphones or maybe its just noisy in the room. That explained, I was able to ask Alexa to show down the volume regardless if the music was playing pretty noisally, so the speakers internal microphones, which usually are enhanced with noises cancellation circuitry, sound quite capable.

Glitches and limitations

The big limitation at this time is that beyond the next thunderstorm and dictionary, Echo only seems to interface with Wikipedia and a few other data repositories (for antics, for instance), although not Google or another search engine optimization such as Google. However, the idea will send a Bing connection to your tablet or maybe phone if the idea cant find what youre asking about. Perhaps in the long run Amazon will exercise a deal using its Seattle neighbor Microsoft to create additional Bing capabilities on the device.

I also stumbled upon some glitches using the music playback: it wouldnt play an Amazon Prime playlist for me personally and then don iHeart Radios Z100 train station, which came on previously as i asked for any Jazz station. Just like all wireless loudspeakers, your listening experience is usually impacted by the caliber of your wireless interconnection. And, in this case, youre also working with a voice-control system thats to retrieve information from the cloud.

Its easy to imagine Alexa locking doorways, turning off lamps, and raising the temperature around the thermostat at your request, understanding that all might be possible using the right software update and maybe a few essential partnerships. Given that will weve already witnessed smart home takes on from voice-activated systems like Siri as well as Cortana, along with a handful of dedicated voice-control clever home devices, it wouldnt be surprising to determine Alexa follow suit. Still, if Replicate does hold clever home ambitions, Amazon online marketplace isnt tipping it is hand yet. Alexa is supposed to get smarter with time. Shes supposed to understand your voice better since you talk to her and gleam speech-training tool in the app, although how it works for those who have multiple people conversing with the device is actually unclear.

Uneven audio

The other problem with Echo is that while it makes Alexas speech sound excellent, its not an incredible speaker for new music playback. It produces a reasonable amount of bass sounds and projects so-called 360-degree audio, but it can distort at better volumes (sometimes badly). For generating music, its fine, but it isnt on par with a speaker like the actual $200 UE Thrive, a smaller cylindrical presenter that sounds an excellent option for its size and is portable.

I sometimes got a little better sound out of the Echo when My partner and i streamed music over Bluetooth and it also helps to experiment with the placement with the speaker to optimize its performance. But distortion is distortion and it also was hard being the speaker from anything above 60 percent volume. Amazons engineers can probably play around using the EQ settings and hopefully help the sound over time with an update. But I might say that it has to be tuned a very little better and tested with various music to ensure that it doesnt slip on certain frequencies, particularly with the low-end.

Facebook pulls back Slingshot messaging app

Facebook recently launched its Snapchat-rivalling Slingshot app, before swiftly pulling it.

Facebook has been working on a video messaging app that matches the ephemeral tone of the hugely popular Snapchat.

Slingshot app

Slingshot will apparently allow users to quickly send short video messages and photos to friends, the contents of which will then expire after a single view. You can also annotate these messages with text and other scribblings.

The app appears to be pretty much ready to roll, as someone at Facebook recently pushed the button for it to be set live on the App Store in a handful of countries.

However, the Slingshot app was pulled by Facebook shortly thereafter. A Facebook representative told The Verge that Slingshot’s publishing had been an accident.

"Earlier today, we accidentally released a version of Slingshot, a new app were working on," reads the statement. "With Slingshot, youll be able to share everyday moments with lots of people at once. Itll be ready soon and were excited for you to try it out."

According to the associated report, there’s one notable difference between Slingshot and Snapchat. Before you can access a message in Facebook’s effort, you have to send a message back to the sender. It’s a pretty obvious attempt to get users active on this new service.

Another noteworthy feature is the ability to hit a React button when viewing a message, which will instantly capture and send your reaction.

Facebook has had its eye on replicating the Snapchat formula for some time now. Not only did it fail with an earlier attempt in Poke, but it was claimed last year that the social network giant had attempted to purchase Snapchat itself for $3 billion.

10 Tips to Conserve Your Smartphone Battery

Apple, BlackBerry, Samsung and other global brands have come up with smartphones equipped with powerful mobile operating systems such as Google’s Android, Nokia’s Symbian, Apple’s iOS, etc, that allows users to play games, listen to mp3s, snap pictures, have access to the Net and even stream videos.

Given their diverse range of capabilities and multi-functionality running on a mobile (as in on-the-go) platform, it’s no wonder that battery life has always been a concern for developers, manufacturers and the users themselves. On average, most smartphone batteries last between one and two days before being completely depleted, and in need of a recharge.

While we wait for the hardware development to catch up, the alternative will be to conserve battery life. As it is with our energy levels, battery life can be effectively utilized and managed, leaving nothing to go to waste.

Without a battery charger or a spare battery with you everywhere you go, you’ll have to make due with minimizing the consumption of battery juice.

Here are 10 essential tips how you can conserve your smartphone’s battery.

1. Turn Off Vibrations

Vibrations are great for notifying you about incoming calls or messages when you’re in the theatre, meetings or other places where it’s necessary to keep the phone silent. In places where it doesn’t matter, it will be better for you to use your ringtone as notification if you want to keep your smartphones on longer.

Vibrations actually use up more power than ringtones. The sounds produced by ringtones are just very tiny vibrations in your smartphone’s speaker. Compare that to the shaking of the entire phone via vibrating a smart weight, playing a ringtone definitely zaps less of your battery. The same applies for using vibration for tactile feedback. If you don’t think it’s necessary, then disable vibrations or at the very least, lessen the magnitude of the vibrations.

2. Dim Your Screen

This one tip affects battery life drastically. It’s obvious that dimming your screen will reduce your smartphone’s power consumption since we all have to activate the screen whenever we use our phones. If our screen is brightly lit up every couple of minutes when we check our emails and such, it eventually will zap battery juice. Auto-brightness setting enable the smartphone to adjust the brightness to its optimal level for reading while conserving battery life.

On the other hand though, you may consider tuning the level permanently to the dimmest level that you can still read under without straining your eyes. Doing so may do wonders to your battery life in the long run.

3. Shorten Screen Timeout

In the same manner, if you wish to minimize the power consumption of your smartphone of the screen display, you ought to consider shortening the screen timeout. This decides how long the screen will remain lit after you finish interacting with it.

Some of us do not have the habit of ‘locking’ the phone after we we are done with it; we just let it go lights out by itself. Keeping the timeout duration short will ensure that the phone doesn’t waste power when you’re not using it.

4. Switching Off When Inactive

Although it is true that turning on your phone consumes more power than unlocking your phone, switching it off for a couple of hours can save more battery than leaving it on sleep or inactive mode. If you know you’re not going to touch your phone for an extended period of time, such as when you’re attending a meeting or sleeping, you can actually cut down a significant amount of energy consumption if you simply switch it off.

You might be wondering why you should even bother about battery level when you’ve a charger with you at home while you sleep. Well, the thing is that repeated charging for certain kind of batteries eats up the battery volume. For such batteries, the best way is to conserve as much as you can so that your battery retains its original capacity as much as possible.

5. Charge Your Battery Correctly

Speaking of phone charging, there are generally two kinds of rechargeable batteries commonly used for smartphones: Lithium-ion (Li-Ion), and Nickel-based batteries: namely Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) and Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd).

The battery capacity in NiCd batteries are reduced every time you recharge them. Nonetheless, NiCd batteries have longer life cycles i.e. they can be recharged more often than NiMH batteries before stop working. Nickel-based batteries should be charged (to the full amount) when they’re more or less out of power, and not when there’s still a good amount of energy left.

Li-Ion batteries have the longest life cycle among the three types of batteries but they also need to be charged more frequently (even when the battery is not fully used up) to maintain its original capacity. To keep your battery lasting longer, find out more about the type of battery that your smartphone uses and maintain the appropriate charging strategy for optimum usage.

6. Close Unnecessary Apps

Some of us open app after app and don’t bother to close them even after we no longer need to use them. This multi-tasking capability is a common feature of smartphones, but it is also a main reason why battery life gets drained away easily. The worst thing is that you’re losing battery juice when you are not even using them. Leaving them open will leave your battery at half-bar in no time.

As often as possible, kill your apps if you are not using them. There are some valuable apps out there that manage the multitasking ability of your smartphone to ensure it performs at its best to conserve battery life without jeopardizing usage. One such Android app is the Advanced Task Killer.

7. Disable GPS

Certain apps eat up more battery juice than others, particularly apps which utilize the GPS system to track your location. Your smartphone has a GPS unit that allows the sending and receiving of signals to and from satellites to determine your exact location, which is integral for some apps to work, for example, map-based apps like Google Maps or to check-in on Facebook.

When left running in the background, some of these apps may continue to send and receive signals. It takes a lot out of your battery to continuously do that, even if you aren’t aware of it. Hence, you should ensure that those particular apps are closed when you really don’t need them. A more extreme way is to disable location services when prompted by these apps. It may slow down the efficiency of these apps but you won’t be tracked on your location and some users deliberately do that for privacy reasons.

8. No Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 3G/4G When Not in Use

Energy is consumed whenever your smartphone searches for signals, Wi-Fi, 3G or Bluetooth etc. When the reception is poor, the phone will continue scanning to attain a good connection. Repeated searches for these signals can easily make your battery level drop a notch.

What I’m saying is that you should turn off your Wi-Fi or Bluetooth when you don’t need to be connected. One convenient way to do it is to switch to ‘Airplane Mode’ or just switch your phone off when you know you can’t get any signal.

On the other hand, when you need good reception for your smartphone, place or position your phone in high connectivity zones. This will prevent your smartphones from constantly seeking for a connection and wasting your precious battery power switching from one signal to the other.

9. Minimize Notifications

With constant connectivity to the Internet, we tend to get notifications on our smartphones all the time, be it updates on the latest news, emails, high scores from games, add-ons for apps etc. But I’m sure that you would only want to be notified on the more essential stuffs like new text messages, or messages from Whatsapp.

Not only is it annoying to constantly receive irrelevant notifications that can actually wait, it is also a powersucker for each of these notifications. Every incoming notification will light up your screen, make a sound alert or vibrate.

Manage your settings well and disable unnecessary notifications to save a little battery power (and avoid being frustrated with these constant notifications).

10. Maintain Cool Temperature

Some of us might have observed that our battery runs out faster when our smartphones are warm. Put simply, don’t leave your smartphones under direct sunlight or in any place that is hot.

One of the more common occurrences would be leaving the smartphone in a car parked under the sun. The battery will function optimally in cooler environments, so do look out for, and try to avoid, scenarios where your phone is exposed to unnecessary and excessive heat.

Astronaut Smartphone Stand

Astronaut Smartphone Stand

I care a great deal about the happiness of my iPhone. He introduced me to Angry Birds after all, so Ive got a lot to thank him for. As such, I wanted to give him somewhere awesome to hang out when I wasnt using him i.e. whilst asleep and incapable of playing Angry Birds

As such, I opted for the utterly brilliant Astronaut iPhone Stand which will make my phone feel like a bit of a big-shot because, as we all know, astronauts are better people than you an I. Except, perhaps, that female astronaut who went rogue and try to kidnap a bunch of people or something.

It would be one small step for my iPhone but one giant leap for my, errrrrrm, sense of self-satisfaction if I were to own this Astronaut iPhone Stand so, NASA, make it so.
