How to Permanently Delete Your Facebook Account

How to Permanently Delete Your Facebook Account

Had enough of Facebook? Heres how to permanently remove your profile from the social network

Facebook can be a great tool for staying in touch with friends and family but, for some people, the constant bombardment of updates, messages, likes, pokes, and advertisements can all become a bit overwhelming, not to mention highly addictive.
In a study by researchers at the University of Winchester, ten self-confessed Facebook addicts were asked to stop using their accounts for four weeks. Many quickly became isolated from friends and family and reported feeling "cut off from the world".

How to deactivate your account

Deactivating your account temporarily means you have the option to return to Facebook whenever you want.

1.         Click the downward arrow at the top right of any Facebook page

2.        Select "Settings"

3.        Click "Security" in the left column

4.        Choose "Deactivate your account", then follow the steps to confirm

If you deactivate your account your profile wont be visible to other people on Facebook and people wont be able to search for you, but some information, such as messages you sent to friends, may still be visible to others.

If decide youd like to go back to Facebook, you can reactivate your account at any time by logging in with your email and password. Your profile will be restored in its entirety.

How to permanently delete your account

If you dont think youll use Facebook again, you can request to have your account permanently deleted. However, after an account has been deleted it wont be possible to reactivate your account or retrieve anything youve shared on your profile.

Before you do this, you may want to download a copy of your information from Facebook:

1.         Click the downward arrow at the top right of any Facebook page

2.        Select "Settings"

3.        Click on the link at the bottom of the main menu that says Download a copy of your Facebook data.

Then you need to go to https://www.facebook.com/help/delete_account , click on "Delete
my account", then follow the steps to confirm.

It may take up to 90 days for Facebook to delete all of the things youve posted, like your photos, status updates or other data stored in backup systems. While Facebook is deleting this information, it is inaccessible to other people using the social network

Some of the things you do on Facebook arent stored in your account. For example, a friend may still have messages from you in their inbox. That information will remain even after you delete your account, so you will need to contact the recipients of you want it removed.

WhatsApp testing Facebook style colored text status feature

WhatsApp testing Facebook style colored text status feature

Last year social networking giant Facebook added colored text statuses  feature on its Android app, that allowed users to set their status with a blend of colorful background, font and emoji.

Now the same feature is being tested on WhatsApp in the beta version 2.17.291 for the Android platform. This new feature was first spotted by Android Police, and reports that the feature is a server-side test, so only a select users are seeing it now.

Users will now see a floating pen icon in the status tab at the bottom of the screen, right above the camera icon. Clicking on the pen icon, brings up the option to type a status, select font, add emoji and background color. When done, users have to hit the green arrow key to set the status, and your contacts will see the published status.

The Facebook-like color text status feature should roll out to all users soon.

WhatsApp recently announced that it has a total of 1.3 billion monthly active users, and over 250 million daily users on the Status feature. WhatsApp Status was introduced back in Feburary, and is a clone of Snapchats Stories.

Update Facebook New Feature Now Can Change Text Status With Coloured Background 2017

Update Facebook New Feature Now Can Change Text Status With Coloured Background 2017

Facebooks core attraction isnt news articles you could find anywhere, its intimate posts from your real friends. That explains why Facebook is trying to make highly personal text statuses as eye-catching as photos with the new test of a colored background option.

The feature lets users select a color that appears behind their text status in place of the normally-white background. Several of the color options offer an Instagram logo-style color gradient, which makes them more stylish and modern than boring flat colors.

Sent to TechCrunch by reader Hoan Do over the weekend, Facebook confirms this feature is in testing. It appears that its only testing in certain regions abroad, not in the US. Users without access to the test dont see the colors if they look at the post, but that would likely change to everyone being able to see the colors if Facebook rolls it out more widely.

[Update: Facebook has now shared more details and a statement about the new feature. Colored status backgrounds are rolling out globally over the next few days. Only Android users will be able to create them, but everyone on iOS, Android, and the web will be able to see them in the News Feed.

A spokesperson writes Were rolling out a change to help people make their text posts more visual. Starting today, people can update the background color of their text-only posts on Android.]

Adding spice to status updates could help Facebook boost original sharing of unique personal content, as opposed to reshaping of news articles and viral videos.

In April, The Information reported that Facebook was experiencing a decline in original, personal sharing. Apparently original content broadcasting was down 21% year over year as of mid-2015, and original broadcast sharing was down 15% year-over-year as of April.

Facebook has tried to downplay that claim in the past, saying original content sharing was healthy. But VP of News Feed Adam Mosseri admitted on stage at TechCrunch Disrupt SF in September that sharing of professional publisher content has grown at a faster rate than original sharing, making the latter a smaller percentage of total content. That may have played into Facebook prioritizing friends and family instead of publishers in an update from September, which could restore a balance with more original content in the feed.

Facebook seemed to already be encouraging text status updates with a big text feature that shows words in a larger font if your status is short, thereby making it more attention-grabbing. Both of these features could be seen as trying to steal thunder from Twitter, which is the most ubiquitous text-focused social network, though one dwarfed in size by Facebook.

When Facebook launched the News Feed, it was all about text. Some might remember the word is being automatically applied after your name so every update was actually about what you were doing, like: Josh Constine is

Yet CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said repeatedly that he sees rich media like video, 360, and VR as the future of sharing on Facebook. But there will always be some things best expressed with some simple words. Colored backgrounds make sure a spontaneous exclamation or a bit of poetry wont get lost in the increasingly flashy feed.

How to Access the Facebook Hidden Settings Menu on Android

How to Access the Facebook Hidden Settings Menu on Android

How to Access the Facebook Hidden Settings Menu on Android

The Facebook app, much like its counterpart the Facebook Messenger app, also has its own hidden internal menu using by Facebook engineers for debugging and testing. This Facebook hidden settings menu cannot be permanently enabled, unlike the Messengers internal menu. Much like Messenger youneed root access or a modified APK by XDA Senior Member evilwombat to access this menu. As in the Messenger tutorial, you will also need to use the Android Debugging Bridge (ADB) or a terminal app such asTermux. If you are using ADB, USB debugging needs to be enabled which can be found in Developer Options on your device.
You will need root access on your phone to follow this tutorial. You can get root access by either flashingMagisk or SuperSU after unlocking your devices bootloader. Note, that using the modified APK linked above requires you to uninstall any existing Facebook apps you have and instead use all of the modified Facebook apps from the same developer that you plan to use.

Access Facebooks Hidden Internal Menu

Using ADB

Download the ADB tools of your choice. These can either be Minimal ADB & Fastboot from our forums or theofficial binaries released by Google. Once installed or extracted, in the folder containing the ADB binary hold shift + right click and click Open command window here (if youre on Windows). If youre on Mac or Linux, then youll need to preface the adb shell command below with the directory to the ADB binary.
Connect your phone to  your computer and grant debugging access. Next, type the following commands in the command prompt:
adb shell
su
Grant superuser access to shell when prompted on your phone.
am start -n "com.facebook.katana/com.facebook.katana.internsettingsactivity.InternSettingsActivity"
You will now see the internal menu open on your phone.

Using terminal

Open the terminal app of your choosing. Personally I use Termux, but anything that can access the terminal will work fine. Type the following commands.
Termux
Termux
Developer: Fredrik Fornwall
Price: Free
su
Grant superuser access when prompted on your device.
am start -n "com.facebook.katana/com.facebook.katana.internsettingsactivity.InternSettingsActivity"
The internal menu will open on your device.

Explanation

We are using adb or the terminal to start the InternSettingsActivity which is the name of the hidden internal menu activity. This is an unexported activity defined in the AndroidManifest file; meaning it cannot be accessed normally from third-party apps. Inside of this internal menu are some settings and tweaks that users of the Facebook app may benefit from. This menu is meant to be only accessed by developers and testers of the Facebook app, so theres a lot you can do. Scroll down to see some examples.

Example Features of the Facebook Internal Menu

Data Saver

This is my favorite feature within the internal settings. You can enable a data usage monitor, which will stop the app transferring data once it reaches a certain limit. This is good for those of you on metered connections, as Facebook can be incredibly data intensive. It is filled with videos and pictures, so its no surprise. Thanks to this menu, you can simply set the amount of data you want to allow the app at maximum, and also reset the counter if you want to allow yourself to use more data. This limiter works on WiFi or mobile data, so those of you on restrictive data caps on your WiFi can make use of this too.

Force App Update

Another interesting feature is a force app update feature. It seems to download the latest version in-app and update, though I didnt get a package install attempt even though a toast told me it was downloading. This feature may be broken, but it seems interesting nonetheless.

Video Stats

Within the internal menu you can enable video specs for playing videos to display the metadata (file information) while you watch a video. You can also enable logging, play videos muted and force autoplay videos. Autoplay settings are in the app already, but its still interesting to see them slightly more advanced here.

And thats all, if you find any other useful features hidden away in the Facebook app, let us know down below in the comments!

Facebook pulls back Slingshot messaging app

Facebook recently launched its Snapchat-rivalling Slingshot app, before swiftly pulling it.

Facebook has been working on a video messaging app that matches the ephemeral tone of the hugely popular Snapchat.

Slingshot app

Slingshot will apparently allow users to quickly send short video messages and photos to friends, the contents of which will then expire after a single view. You can also annotate these messages with text and other scribblings.

The app appears to be pretty much ready to roll, as someone at Facebook recently pushed the button for it to be set live on the App Store in a handful of countries.

However, the Slingshot app was pulled by Facebook shortly thereafter. A Facebook representative told The Verge that Slingshot’s publishing had been an accident.

"Earlier today, we accidentally released a version of Slingshot, a new app were working on," reads the statement. "With Slingshot, youll be able to share everyday moments with lots of people at once. Itll be ready soon and were excited for you to try it out."

According to the associated report, there’s one notable difference between Slingshot and Snapchat. Before you can access a message in Facebook’s effort, you have to send a message back to the sender. It’s a pretty obvious attempt to get users active on this new service.

Another noteworthy feature is the ability to hit a React button when viewing a message, which will instantly capture and send your reaction.

Facebook has had its eye on replicating the Snapchat formula for some time now. Not only did it fail with an earlier attempt in Poke, but it was claimed last year that the social network giant had attempted to purchase Snapchat itself for $3 billion.

How to Enable Two Factor Authentication For Gmail Facebook Apple Twitter Outlook Yahoo Accounts

As the leaking of private photos stolen from several celebrities proves, we all need to be more careful than ever to protect our data on the Internet. You might think that this sort of thing only happens to celebrities, and the rest of us need not worry, but think about all the data thats there in just your email account. Social networks are our public face, and email holds our financial data and more.
A strong password is a good first step, but setting up two-factor authentication adds another layer between other people and your data. If you do this, then access to your account is restricted only to people who have your password - and also access to the second level of authentication, which can take the form of a text message, an email, or even a paired app on your smartphone.
(Also see: How to Prevent Theft of Photos From Your iCloud Account)
Some services offer all three modes of verification - others rely on one or the other method. Regardless, once your authenticator is set up, trying to log into your account results in a code being sent by the chosen method, and without this code, the account wont be accessed.
Gmail
Your Google account is probably the one you want to secure first. Not only is your email account a repository of all sorts of important information, but also, since our email ids are the default way to sign into Web services today, your Gmail account can also serve as a gateway to all your other accounts. To set up two-factor authentication, you need to take the following steps:
1. Go to Google Account Security and under Password, look for 2-step Verification.
2. Click setup. On the next page, click Start Set Up.
3. At the next page, sign in. In the box, enter your phone number.
4. Choose the mode by which you will receive the code > click Send code.
5. A six-digit code will arrive on your phone via text message or by a call. Enter the code on the website and click Verify > Next > Confirm.
Next, Google will ask you to reconnect all your apps and devices. If youve configured apps to access your Google account on any device, you will have to create a separate app password for each and sign in again. To do this, click Configure when Google prompts you to. Now select the app (click Other if it isnt mentioned) and device from drop-down menus and click Generate. Each code password you generate will only work for one app.
google_twostep.jpg
Facebook
Facebooks two-step verification is not available in all regions as of now. If it is available in your region, heres how to set it up.
1. Open Facebook account security settings. If you see a header called Login Approvals, under Login Notifications, then this is available in your region. If not, then youll have to wait till Facebook rolls out this feature.
2. Click the Edit button next to Login Approvals. Check "Require a security code to access my account from other browsers". Click Save Changes. Click Get Started in the pop-up.
3. Now youll see a pop-up titled Alternate Security Code Delivery. Click Continue, re-enter your password and hit Submit. Finally, you can key in your phone number and click Continue. Now you will be sent a code via text message. Enter this code on the website and hit Confirm.
4. Facebook will now tell you that you can disable Login Approvals within a week. In case you dont, you will need the security code sent via text message every time you log in from a new browser. Facebook also lets you a few login approval codes that you can use when you dont have your phone. You may use these while you are travelling and your phone is out of coverage area.

Apple
Apples two-step verification is a bit of a long-winded process that will take a minimum of three days to set up. This is how.
1. Open your Apple ID page and sign in.
2. Click on Password and Security on the left side.
3. You will have to answer the two security questions you set up when you created your account.
4. On the right-hand side, you will see Two-step verification at the top. Click Get Started.
5. With two-step verification enabled, you will need any two of the following to manage your Apple ID: Your password, a trusted device (which can receive the code using Find My iPhone) and Your Recovery Key. Every time you sign in to iTunes or make an iTunes purchase using a new device, you will have to enter this information to sign in. Apple will show you a warning for this and say that it will not be able to reset your password should you need it. If you are fine with that, keep clicking continue for two screens, and then click Get Started.
6. As an added security precaution to set up two-step verification on your Apple ID, the company asks you to wait three days to continue setting this up. In the meantime, make sure that Find My iPhone/iPad is enabled on your device. You can do this by going to Settings > iCloud > Find My iPhone > On.
7. Sign in to your Apple ID again three days later and open the security settings page to manage devices registered to your account. Here you will be able to mark devices as trusted, so you can sign in with just a password from them.
Apple_two_step_verification.jpg
Twitter
There are two ways to set up two-factor authentication for Twitter, but one of them might not be an option for most people. If you want to use text messages for authentication, your phone needs to be registered with Twitter. Unfortunately, India is no longer in the list of countries where Twitter has any SMS support. In case your phone has already been registered, all you need to do is this:
1. Go to Twitter account settings and select "Send login requests to my phone".
2. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and hit Save changes to enable this.
In case you cant add your phone number, its still possible to use the Twitter app on your smartphone as an authenticator. This is what you need to do:
1. Start the Twitter app, and go to the settings page.
2. Tap on your account > scroll down, and tap on security.
3. Turn on Login Verification. Youll be shown a backup code, which lets you bypass this - save the code somewhere private.
4. Once you do this, attempting to log into Twitter from any other device will send a request to this app. To complete the login, youll need to come back to this page in the app > tap on Login Requests > Tap on the check mark to allow the login.
Twitter_twostep.jpg
Outlook
Microsoft makes it very easy to set up two-factor authentication. Heres how.
1. Sign in to your Microsoft account and click Security & Password on the left.
2. When you sign up, Outlook asks you to provide an alternative email address or phone number. Before you can modify account information, Outlook will ask you to enter your alternative email address or the phone number. Do that and click Next. Youll get a code on your email address or phone. Enter the code and click Next.
4. Now click Set up two-step verification > Next. Now you can choose whether you want to use your email address, phone or an app to receive the second code. We suggest you pick a phone because you are most likely to have it with you at all times. Enter your phone number to finish the process. You will receive a four-digit code on your phone. Enter it and hit OK to enable two-step verification for your account.
Outlook_twostep1.jpg
Yahoo
Try these steps to set up an added security layer for your Yahoo account.
1. Visit this Yahoo page to set up two-factor authentication. Click Get started.
2. If you hadnt already set up your phone number with Yahoo, click Add New Phone > enter your phone number > click Send code.
3. Enter the code in the box > click OK.
4. This will set up second sign-in verification on your phone. You can choose between using only your phone for verification or allowing the security questions that you filled in when you created the account.
yahoo_twostep.jpg
This should have helped you set up two-step verification on your accounts. For more tutorials, visit our How to section.
