Is there a competition law issue lurking on the horizon of cloud computing

Is there a competition law issue lurking on the horizon of cloud computing

Are we on the cusp of a potential competition law problem in the area of cloud computing services? The Economist tantalizingly, in an article entitled Cloud Chronicles, which appeared in its August 27th issue, has described the present circumstances of the industry, and why there might be room for future competition law concern. The culprit, if it comes to pass, may well be Amazon Web Services (usually referred to as AWS), which is the cloud-computing part of amazon, com. The story goes like this.

In 2006, Amazon made available a beta version of a service called Elastic Compute Cloud, described as
the central offering of AWS. The service took off, in part, according to the article, because it coincided with the rise of the smartphone and the supporting app industry. Developers loved the opportunity to forego maintaining a hardware system and paying a fixed fee for use of software, in favor of paying only for the capacity that they used. AWS is said to have engaged in many rounds of price reductions, enabling it to capture increased market share. As well, AWS has, and continues to offer, an increasing number of add-on services, the marginal cost for which is minimal since the software has already been developed.

As such, AWS early on enjoyed first mover advantage (being the first cloud computing service to succeed on a large scale) and continues to benefit from network effects. As well, the burden of switching costs served to make it more likely that a user will be reluctant to move to another cloud service. Based on these advantages, AWS has raced far ahead of its competition. It is three times larger than its nearest competitorMicrosoft Azure. Other potential competitors are even less visible, including competing offerings from IBM and Google. At least these two hi-tech behemoths are still in the game; Hewlett-Packard has apparently simply withdrawn from the field. Even Salesforce.com, which is a prominent provider of on-line applications, announced that it will begin to make use of AWS services.

What will slow AWSs continued dominant position in the industry? The article suggests that users are aggressive in trying to avoid being locked-in to AWS as their sole cloud services provider. It further reports that, at least in Europe, two-fifths of the companies in the cloud use more than one cloud service. Also, while the AWS service is highly popular with start-up developers, it has less success in attracting larger, established companies, in part, it would seem, from a hesitation by such companies to be tied up with a potential competitor, given the ever-increasing nature of Amazons product and service offerings. These countervailing forces argue that there may be a limit as to how much more AWS can grow.

Still, based on the information in the article, AWS does seem to enjoy a dominant position with smaller developers. If this were to be found to be the relevant population for vetting competition law concerns, then attention to pricing (should prices begin to tick upwards) and the ease or difficulty of switching to another cloud service, bears watch, especially since the computing infrastructure required might serve as a potential barrier to entry for competitors. Or perhaps less conventional metrics will be brought to bear. The article itself does not go into a discussion of how anti-competitive behavior by AWS might look, stating merely that
AWS could end up dominating the IT industry just as IBMs System/360, a family of mainframe computers, did until the 1980s. If that happens, the antitrust authorities may eventually have to step in, as they did with IBM.
This in itself is an interesting comment. This Kat is hoary enough to remember the antitrust case against IBM, filed in 1969, which dragged on until 1982. There, the issue was IBMs alleged anti-competitive conduct based on its alleged dominance of the mainframe computer industry. What is notable is that this decade-long lawsuit came to an end because the US Depart of Justice ultimately decided to dismiss the case. Developments in the computer world had moved on since the filing of the law suit in the late 1960s, and the capacity of IBM to dominate the computer world had passed.

Even more, this Kat remembers the frequently made comment that antitrust suits such as the IBM case, especially in the technology area, are almost always late to the game: either the technology is passing the target industry by, or the law suit is a cue to the target to seek new products and markets. If this be true, then it raises an interesting question: what would the filing of such a law suit say about the cloud-computing industry? Is the pace of innovation so seriously stuck in neutral, and the nature of cloud-computing so very different from the world of IBMs System/ 360 family of mainframe computers, that there might be greater justification in considering such a law suit, should there be prima facie indicia of anti-competitive behavior? Or will such a suit be a redux of the IBM litigation? Stay tuned (especially if your computing connectivity is from the cloud).

Resolved Unable to transfer or copy files to SD Card issue on MI phone using ES File explorer

Issue Moving Files to SD Card issue on MI phone using ES File explorer

On Mi Phones, you may encounter issues when attempting to transfer files from the phone storage to SD CARD using ES File Explorer. I did not do an extensive research on this but I confirm that this issues did not occur on MiUi version less than 7.5. If this problem exists, then we can't create new files and folders using the ES File Explorer options on the SD Card. While attempting to create, copy-paste or move files, we normally get a prompt to allow permission to ES File Explorer to access SDCARD Root.

Half Fix Dead Pixels Issue on Redmi Note 4

Half Fix Dead Pixels Issue on Redmi Note 4

dead pixels on redmi note 4

Hello Folks, if you are facing Dead pixel issue on Redmi note 4, or you are noticing some Blue Dots on the screen of Redmi note 4 when you watch movies or so, then you are on the right place,

Here I will try to fix the dead pixel issue on Redmi note 4 device, I would like to tell you that this is a very common issue for most of the Xiaomi Phone I have used, as I have the same issue on Redmi Note 3G and one of my Redmi 2 Device, I will explain all the thing that what are dead pixels and how to prevent them from appearing on your phone, also its good to inform you that only 20% time you will be able to fix this dead pixel issue at home, 80% times you may have to visit Mi Service centre to replace your Mobile screen to solve this issue.

First lets talk about what is Dead Pixel on Redmi Note 4 or any other Phone

Our smartphone screen or any other LED Screens are made using millions of small pixels to provide us bestest possible details on graphics, however some time, some of the pixel get damaged by some technical issues and they just start not responding or changing their color accordingly, they just stuck on a single color that is why we can easily identify them by using some apps available on the play store to see how many dead pixels we have on our phone.

Also there is one more thing, some pixels that is stucked on a single color like Black is Dead Pixels and some are colorful like Blue, Red, or Green that is count as stuck pixel, the stuck pixel could be fixed by using some apps to force them to lit up, but as I have told earlier there is no guaranty that you will be able to fix dead pixel issue on Redmi or any other phone.

Some pixels which only shows black color all the time, they are called as Dead Pixels, both the stuck pixel and dead pixel are the totally hardware issues, I would suggest you to visit the service center to solve this issue if your phone is under the warranty, and if your phones warranty has expired then you first try the method I am going to fix the dead pixel issue, before going to service center.

Note: Stuck pixels can be fixed, but dead pixels never gonna fixed without replacing the Mobile Screen.

Try to Fix the Stuck Pixels on Your Redmi Note 4, Follow the Steps

  1. Download the Dead Pixel Test and Fix App from the Google Play Store
  2. Open the app and click on Fix Dead Pixel, and ignore if see any ads.
  3. Now Click on Start, this will start refreshing all the pixels on your screen at a very rapid pace
Leave it for 15 to 20 minutes, and it will rapidly force all the pixels to start working, but as I have told earlier, there is no guarantee that it will fix the issue of dead pixels on your android phone.

After that open the same app and click on check dead pixels and click auto or manual, to check. Auto mode will automatically change the color of the screen and display you different different color so that you can identify the dead pixel, or you can choose manual mode, on which you have to touch the screen manually to change the color of the screen and check whether there are a dead or stuck pixels present or not.

If you are still facing the dead pixel issue on android or Redmi note 4, then you have to visit the service center and submit your phone for the display change.

If you have any other display related issue on your phone please feel free to share it with us, leave the comment below.

A New Issue Tracker for our AOSP Developers

A New Issue Tracker for our AOSP Developers

Posted by Sandie Gong, Developer Relations Program Manager & Chris Iremonger, Android Technical Program Manager

Like many other issue trackers at Google, were upgrading our Android Open
Source Project (AOSP) issue tracking system to Issue Tracker. We are
hoping to facilitate a better collaboration between our developers and our
Android product teams by using a tool we use internally at Google to track bugs
and feature requests during product development.

Starting today, all issues formerly at code.google.com/p/android/issues
will migrate to Issue Tracker under the Android
Public Tracker component. You may have noticed that we are already using the
new tool to collect feedback on the O Developer
Preview!

What has been migrated

  • All
open and closed issues youve filed

  • All
    your starred issues

  • Allissues youve commented on

Getting started with Issue Tracker

You can learn more about navigating our Issue Tracker from our developer documentation.
By default, Issue Tracker displays only the issues assigned to you. You can
easily change
that to show a hotlist of your choice, a bookmark group, or a saved search.
You can also adjust
notification settings by clicking the gear icon in the top right corner and
selecting Settings.

The mappings in Issue Tracker are also slightly different than code.google.com
so make sure to check out Life of a Bug to
learn more about what the various statuses mean.

Searching for component specific issues

Opening a code.google.com issue link will automatically redirect you to the new
system. Weve cleaned up some of the spam, but youll be able to find all of the
other issues from code.google.com in Issue Tracker, including any
issue youve reported, commented on, or starred.

You can view all reported Android issues in the Android
Public Tracker component and drill down to see reported issues for specific
categories of issues, such as Tools and Support Libraries, by searching
for specific components.

Filing a bug or feature request

Before filing a new issue, please check if it is already reported in the issues list. Let us know what issues are important to you by starring
an existing issue.

Submitting a new issue is easy. Once you click "Create Issue", search for the
appropriate component for your issue. Alternatively, you can just follow the
correct issue creation link for each component listed in Report Bugs.

Heres some helpful links to get you started!
