Nokia has confirmed its struggling to get Brits interested in Window Phones, but apparently the once-mighty Finn is having more luck flogging Lumias across the pond -- presumably because Microsoft has a pretty sizeable fan-base in its home country.

In a statement, accompanying its first quarter results for 2012, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said, "We have launched four Lumia devices ahead of schedule to encouraging awards and popular acclaim. The actual sales results have been mixed. We exceeded expectations in markets including the United States, but establishing momentum in certain markets including the UK has been more challenging."

Nokia revealed it sold 11.9 million smart phones in the quarter, down 51 per cent on the same period a year ago, and 70.8 million feature phones, down 16 per cent on the same quarter last year.

The transition to Windows Phone continues to bite chunks out of the Finnish giants bottom line. Nokia made a whopping loss of �1.3bn in Q1, on revenue of �7.4bn -- 3 billion fewer euros than it had pouring into its coffers a year ago.

"We are navigating through a significant company transition in an industry environment that continues to evolve and shift quickly," said Elop, putting himself forward for Understatement of the Year award 2012.

"Over the last year we have made progress on our new strategy, but we have faced greater than expected competitive challenges."

The former Microsoft exec turned Nokia head honcho also conceded that times are tough at the budget end of Nokias mobile portfolio -- doubtless because Android continues to batter down the price of budget phones, even as its ups their specs.

"The lower price tiers of our industry are undergoing a structural change, and traditional feature phones are challenged by full touch devices," said Elop -- for full touch devices read Android phones.

Elop said Nokia will continue to invest in its Series 40 platform -- which is used on its Asharange of not-entirely-smart-phones. Expect some new Ashas to arrive in Q2, Elop added.

Commenting on the results via Twitter, Adam Leach, analyst at Ovum, said: "Nokia is continuing to be burnt at both ends of the candle, losing share at the low-end as well as the high-end."

Leach anticipates "still worse to come through this year before Lumia starts picking up momentum".

"Nokia needs Lumia to build serious momentum this year," he added.

Nokias results also reveal it was paid $250m by Microsoft in Q1 in "platform support payments". Nokia said it expects to get "billions of US dollars" in payments from Microsoft for platform support and software royalties over the lifetime of the pairs alliance.

Nokia also revealed that Colin Giles, its executive vice president of sales who has been with the company for two decades, will leave at the end of June -- to be "closer to his family".

Apple Patent Hints At iPhones That Can Flip Themselves During A Fall To Protect Vulnerable Areas

You don’t know the true meaning of pain until you’ve dropped your shiny new iPhone on a hard surface. If you’re lucky, it will land on its back and your case will protect it, but if you’re not, it’ll land flat on its face and you’ll need a new display. But what if there was a way of ensuring it landed on its back every time?

A new Apple patent that covers a “Protective Mechanism for an Electronic Device” describes how future iPhones and other mobile devices could have built-in motors that automatically flip them over in mid-air after they’ve been dropped to protect vulnerable areas.

Here’s how it would work: Inside your iPhone there would be a special motor that was in communication with the processor. When your iPhone’s sensors detect that the device has been dropped, the sensors tell the processor which quickly determines the orientation of your device.

It can then trigger the motor “to alter the angular momentum of the device during the free fall to change the orientation of the device towards the orientation that would avoid impact at the vulnerable area.”

Apple describes a number of ways a device could be protected during a fall, and one of its more interesting ideas includes a fan or jet propulsion system that could change “slow or stop the impact of the device with a surface.” Think jets of air that would cause your iPhone to hover above the ground when you drop it.

It seems more likely, however, that Apple would employ a special motor that could flip the device onto a “safe zone” during free-fall. So, providing there is enough distance between the device and the hard surface when you drop it, and therefore plenty of time, your iPhone could ensure it always lands on its back to protect its display and other components.

With display manufacturers working on “unbreakable” panels, we may never need technology like this — in just a few years, our smartphones could be significantly more robust and less likely to break after a fall. But while we continue to use devices made of fragile glass and plastics, this kind of system could save a lot of smartphones from expensive repairs.

Packing a stripped-down Linux system with a non-optical motion sensor, itll work out what youre writing and buzz you if it thinks youve made a mistake.

The pen has two modes – Calligraphy mode and Orthography mode. In Calligraphy Mode the pen vibrates once if a letter is written wrong or illegibly. In Orthography Mode the pen vibrates once for a misspelled word and twice to point out grammatical errors in a sentence.

Lernstift works differently. The pen recognizes words, gestures and symbols, even if you only "draw them in the air". This opens up all new possibilities for whiteboarding applications.

With its exchangeable writing system the pen can be easily turned into a pencil, fountain pen or ballpoint.

Dell Tablet Streak the dualism that has a strong Fascination

Dell Streak dualism not only tablet that can be used as a phone, but also has other benefits include: having a very fast reaction to touch or responsive, has a camera and video functions are good and clear. So Dell Streak may not only be called a two in one, but also all in one. Not complete.
