Android Things Developer Preview 3
Android Things Developer Preview 3
Posted by Wayne Piekarski,
Developer Advocate for IoT
Today, we are releasing the Developer Preview 3 (DP3) of Android Things,
bringing new features and bug fixes to the platform. This preview is part of our
commitment to provide regular updates to developers who are building Internet of
Things (IoT) products with our platform. Android developers can quickly build
smart devices using Android APIs and Google services, while staying secure with
updates directly from Google. The System-on-Module (SoM) architecture supports
prototyping with development boards, and then scaling them to large production
runs while using the same Board Support Package (BSP) from Google.
Android Bluetooth APIs
DP3 now includes support for all Android Bluetooth APIs in android.bluetooth
and android.bluetooth.le,
across all Android Things supported hardware. You can now write code that
interacts with both Bluetooth classic and low energy (LE) devices just like a
regular Android phone. Existing samples such as Bluetooth
LE advertisements and scanning and Bluetooth LE
GATT can be used unmodified on Android Things. We have also provided two new
samples, Bluetooth
LE GATT server and Bluetooth audio
sink.
USB Host support
Android version 3.1 and later supports USB
Host, which allows a regular user space application to communicate with USB
devices without root privileges or support needed from the Linux kernel. This
functionality is now supported in Android Things, to enable interfacing with
custom USB devices. Any existing code supporting USB Host will work on Android
Things, and an extra sample USB Enumerator is available that demonstrates
how to iterate over and print the interfaces and endpoints for each USB device.
Feedback
Once again, thank you to all the developers who submitted feedback for the
previous developer previews. Please continue to send us your feedback by filing
bug
reports and feature
requests, and ask any questions on stackoverflow.
To download images for Developer Preview 3, visit the Android Things download
page, and find the changes in the release
notes. You can also join Googles IoT
Developers Community on Google+, a great resource to keep up to date and
discuss ideas, with over 4100 new members.

HOW TO BECOME A DEVELOPER AND USE OF IT
HOW TO BECOME A DEVELOPER AND USE OF IT
Friends, only few people know what is developers mode, what can we do with it Today we are going to tell you about androids this silent features gain.
1. Background process limit: Right down the bottom of the list, this option lets you set how many processes can run in the background at any one time.
2. Bluetooth HCI snoop log: The Enable Bluetooth HCI snoop log allows you to capture and analyze Bluetooth HCI (Host Controller Interface) packets. Enabling this will places them for analysis in a file on the device storage (/sdcard/btsnoop_hci.log) for retrieval.
3. Bug report: Right at the top of the list you will find Take Bug Report. Tapping this option surfaces the log files on your device, allowing you to send them wherever you wish to view them.
4. Debug GPU overdraw: GPU overdraw happens every time the application asks the system to draw something on top of something else. Debug GPU overdraw gives you information about this.
5. Desktop backup password: Android Developer Options allow you to backup and restore to and from your PC things such as apps and their associated data. This option requires a password for such backups.
6. Dont keep activities: Be very careful about using this setting: it force closes every application as soon as you leave its main view.
7. Enable OpenGL traces: A setting that records OpenGL errors. Enable OpenGL traces places errors in a log file of your choosing.
8. Force 4x MSAA: This setting forces multi-sample anti-aliasing (MSAA). This makes things look better, but puts more strain on the CPU / RAM.
9. Force GPU rendering: This setting forces apps to use hardware 2D rendering, even if they were written to not use it. It can make things look great, or it can temporarily bork your phone. Use with care.
10. Force RTL layout direction: This forces screen orientation for right-to-left language support. Useful principally for developers of multi-language apps.
11. Keep your phone awake: Check the Stay awake opotion and the screen on your phone to stay on anytime and every time it is plugged in. Useful if you are working on Android development and find it annoying that the screen keeps timing out. But it wont do your screen any good in the medium term.
12. Mock locations: Hit the Allow Mock Locations option, and you will be able to manually write location information. This is useful if you are developing an app that uses location information.
13. Pointer location: Places an information bar at the top of your screen that tells you the coordinates of the last place the screen was touched.
14. Power menu bug reports: This adds an option to the menu you see when you press and hold the power key, allowing you to collect and send a bug report.
15. Process stats: This is one of only a couple of options that remains enabled even when you switch off Developer Options. It shows you a tonne of data about what is going on in your smartphone or tablet.
16. Profile GPU rendering: This setting draws a graph - a visual rendering of how hard the GPU is working. You can either view onscreen or save to a file.
17. Select debug app: Choose an app, debug it.
18. Select runtime: Here you can choose to use either Dalvik or ART. Important for developers creating apps to run on Android L. (See also: How to fix Wi-Fi problems with Android Lollipop.)
19. Show all ANRs: Makes every process show an App Not Responding dialog if it hangs. Even if it is running in the background, which is useful if the app you are developing is interfering with another process, and you need to work out what is happening.
20. Show CPU usage: Allows you to view CPU information inscreen at all times.
21. Show GPU view updates: Enable this setting and any onscreen element drawn with GPU hardware is viewed with a red overlay.
22. Show hardware layer updates: Tells you when hardware layers update.
23. Show layout bounds: This useful tool marks the edges of all the elements in a dialog so you know where a touch will activate them.
24. Show surface updates: Selecting this option makes the edge of an onscreen window flash when its contents are updated.
25. Show touches: This option adds a visual cue on the screen wherever a touch is registered.
26. Simulate secondary displays: Allows you to simulate different screen sizes.
27. Strict mode enabled: Flashes the screen when an app uses the main thread to perform long and intensive operations.
28. Transition animation scale: This setting sets the speed for transition-animation playback.
29. USB debugging: Allows your Android device to communicate via USB to your computer via the Android Debug Bridge (ADB). You can also revoke USB debugging authorizations: When you use a computer to debug over USB for the first time, you have to authorize it and set up a keypair. This setting revokes that.
30. Verify apps over USB: Use this setting and Google scans apps you installed looking for malicious behavior.
31. Wait for debugger: Not enabled unless you are set up to debug an app. When enabled it prevents that app from starting until the debugger is attached.
32. Window animation scale: Sets the speed for window-animation playback.

Welcome to Google Developer Day at Game Developer Conference 2017
Welcome to Google Developer Day at Game Developer Conference 2017
Posted by Paul Bankhead, Director, Product Management, Google Play
Mobile gaming is more popular than ever. Over the past year, we saw breakout
hits, including Pokemon
GO, Star
Wars: Galaxy of Heroes, Clash
Royale and Reigns
introduce new, high quality gaming experiences on Google Play. Gamers around the
world were also able to access Google Play more easily than ever before, helping
developers reach a larger audience and grow their businesses. In 2016, nearly
300 million new (30 day active) users adopted Android devices from emerging
markets such as India, Brazil, and Indonesia. And last year, more than 100
million new users were able to access locally relevant forms of payments (such
as direct carrier billing or gift cards) helping more people globally access and
buy their favorite apps and games on Google Play.
Weve also focused heavily on polishing our software and hardware offerings to
improve the overall gaming experience on Android. The release of Nougat
delivered high-performance realtime 3D graphics with the Vulkan API and the
launch of Pixel phones
provided the first Daydream-ready devices tailored for immersive mobile VR.
Elsewhere, the expansion of Firebase provided the
tools and infrastructure to support developers throughout the lifecycle of their
game with features like real-time analytics, push notifications, storage, and
ads. To streamline the integration, Firebase is now completely available for C++
and Unity developers.
- NEW FEATURES TO HELP YOU SUCCEED ON GOOGLE PLAY
Today, during our annual Developer
Day at the Game Developers Conference, we introduced new tools to improve
the overall discovery on Google Play, especially supporting developers who build
high quality and engaging games.

- Promoting high quality experiences based on engagement, not just
installs: With the enormous variety of games available on Google Play,
there are many instances when great games dont get the visibility and attention
they deserve. Recently, weve begun tuning our algorithms to optimize for user
engagement, not just downloads. This is one of our ways to reward quality, which
for games means promoting titles with stickiness (strong engagement and
retention metrics) as well as a more traditional measure like a high star
rating.
- Offer sales and increase purchases of premium games with
strikethrough pricing: Available in the Google Play Developer Console
starting today, strikethrough pricing allows developers to run their own price
promotions on paid apps and games leading to greater awareness and conversion.
During our pilot phase, developers not only saw a 3x20x lift in installs during
their promotions, they also maintained a nice lift once the sales ended.
- More curation of high quality games through editorial pages:
One more way well highlight quality games is through new editorial
pages on the Play store launching later this month. These pages allow our
editors to hand-select games exemplifying optimal gaming experiences on Android.
They allow users to explore different game styles and genres with editorial
reviews on themes such as epic RPGs and top racing games.
- UPCOMING GAMES ON GOOGLE PLAY
At our Developer Day, we also gave attendees a sneak peek at some high-fidelity
games coming to Google Play later this year. Including titles from major studios
to indies, and even two new VR titles, theres something for every gamer!

- Available for pre-registration on Google Play
- TRANSFORMERS:
Forged to Fight by Kabam is a new high-definition, action-fighting
mobile game set in an immersive world. The game will feature authentic
Transformers "more than meets the eye" action, allowing players to engage with
Optimus Prime, Megatron and many other popular Autobots and Decepticons in a
stunning 3D environment. The game will be available worldwide on April 5, 2017. - Battle
Breakers is a new frenetic tactical role-playing game from Epic
Games, powered by Unreal Engine 4. A vibrant fantasy sci-fi cartoon adventure,
Battle Breakers lets you recruit and build a dream team from hundreds of unique
heroes to battle monsters as you take back the Kingdom, one break at a time! - Injustice
2 lets you guide your stable of Super Heroes and Villains to
victory. Expanding on the hit game Injustice: Gods Among Us, Injustice 2
delivers brand new characters, tons of exciting new modes and the look and
fighting style that NetherRealm Studios is known for. Injustice 2 will be
available on Google Play for Android devices in May.
- Coming soon
- Virtual Rabbids is the first VR Rabbids experience on
mobile developed by Ubisoft Montpellier in collaboration with Bucharest.
Available this spring on Daydream, players will find themselves in some of the
most precarious situations as they race to save the planet. - Beartopia is a cooperative multiplayer village game by Spry
Fox. Make friends, work together and grow a thriving community.
Later this afternoon, well host a series of lightning talks to share what it takes to launch successful VR and AR games, build
with Firebase, implement machine learning in your game, and so much more. Visit our site for more info and the Google Developer Day schedule. For those who
cant make it in person, watch the live stream!
This is just the start of what we have planned for 2017. We hope you can make
use of these tools to improve your games, engage your audience, and grow your
business and revenue.

Publish your app with confidence from the Google Play Developer Console
Publish your app with confidence from the Google Play Developer Console
Posted by Kobi Glick, Product Manager, Google Play
Publishing a new app, or app update, is an important and exciting milestone for
every developer. In order to make the process smoother and more trackable, were
announcing the launch of a new way to publish apps on Google Play with some new
features. The changes will give you the ability to manage your app releases with
more confidence via a new manage releases page in the Google Play Developer Console.
- Manage your app updates with clarity and control
The new manage releases page is where you upload alpha, beta, and production
releases of your app. From here, you can see important information and the
status of all your releases across tracks.

The new manage releases page.
- Easier access to existing and new publishing
features
Publishing an app or update is a big step, and one that every developer wants to
have confidence in taking. To help, weve added two new features.
First, weve added a validation step that highlights potential issues before you
publish. The new "review and rollout" page will appear before you confirm the
roll out of a new app and flag if there are validation errors or warnings. This
new flow will make the app release process easier, especially for apps using
multi-APK. It also provides new information; for example, in cases where you
added new permissions to your app, the system will highlight it.

Second, its now simpler to perform and track staged roll-outs during the
publishing flow. With staged rollouts, you can release your update to a growing
% of users, giving you a chance to catch and address any issues before affecting
your whole audience.
If you want to review the history of your releases, it is now possible to track
them granularly and download previous APKs.
Finally weve added a new artifacts library under manage releases where you can
find all the files that help you manage a release.
- Start using the new manage releases page today
You can access the new manage releases page in the Developer Console. Visit the
Play Developer Help Center for more information. With these changes, were
helping you to publish, track and manage your app with confidence on Google
Play.

Pebble Smart Watch Adds Support for All iOS 7 Notifications New Developer SDK and APIs video
Pebble today announced a significant update to its smart watch that allows any Notification Center alert to be pushed directly to the watch, a big improvement from the prior version which only allowed some notifications like calls and text messages to be sent.
Now, any iOS 7 notification -- whether from Facebook, Google Maps, Calendar or any other app -- will appear directly on the Pebble Smart Watch. The company also announced the next major version of the Pebble SDK for developers, including new APIs for Javascript, the accelerometer, data logging and persistent storage.
A new Pebble app for iOS will enable this functionality and is currently under review by Apple. Expect an update on the iTunes Store soon. Pebble is streaming the announcement live at 10AM Pacific so developers can see the latest updates.
First, were introducing a delightful user experience for Pebble customers using iOS. Pebble is now fully integrated with iOS 7 and works seamlessly with Notification Center. This means that any notifications that youve enabled in Notification Center on your iOS 7 device will appear on your Pebble -- just like that. Its easier than ever to pick and choose which updates you want to see on your watch. This includes notifications beyond calls, texts and emails, such as Calendar, Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Instagram, LinkedIn, Flickr, Dropbox, WhatsApp, Flipboard and more.
Second, were launching Pebble SDK 2.0, which makes it even easier for developers to build awesome Pebble apps. SDK 2.0 opens up an entire universe of rich new watch apps thanks to four new APIs: Javascript, Accelerometer, Data Logging and Persistent Storage. These API allow developers to make Pebble apps that interface directly with the web (real-time weather, transit info, location check-in), access the accelerometer (health/fitness monitoring and gesture-based remote control), log data when disconnected from the phone (health/fitness tracking), and store info on the watch (high scores for games, settings).
The Pebble raised more than $10 million on Kickstarter, potentially proving the viability of the smart watch as a product. Apple is widely rumored to be working on its own iWatch and recently invested hundreds of millions of dollars in a new Arizona factory to make sapphire glass, perhaps for such a product.
Pebble says it has native apps from Foursquare, GoPro and Yelp on the way, with more to come. The Pebble smart watch is available for $150 in five colors from getpebble.com and at Best Buy and AT&T retail stores.
